Spin-off Incubatees
Dr. Fe J. Lagas
CMU-ATBI facilitated the creation of a spin-off enterprise by Dr. Fe Lagas, a retired professor from the College of Agriculture, CMU, for the Utility Model entitled: A Composition of Organic Fertilizer Capable of Enhancing Soil Organic Matters. It was later named EFJL Organic Fertilizer.
The technology was granted a Utility Model certificate from IPOPHL, which was made possible through the assistance of CMU IPTBM.
With CMU Intellectual Property Technology Business Management as the lead, the technology was subjected to Fairness Opinion Report (FOR) application, an assessment of whether a proposed technology transfer agreement between a Research and Development Institute (RDI) and a technology adopter or business is fair to the government. After a series of meetings and evaluation, DOST Region 10, as decided by the created Opinion Board Fairness Opinion Report was granted to the said technology, making it the first technology with IP protection granted with FOR in the Region.
The enterprise is manufacturing solid organic fertilizer sold in 38 kg/sack at P250.00/sack. This fertilizer can enhance the soil's organic matter and help solve the environmental pollution caused by some agricultural wastes. Also, this fertilizer improves the physic-chemical (soil texture) and biological properties of the soil, such as granulation and aggregation that eventually yield improved microbial activities.
The CMU-ATBI provided her with the necessary services to commercialize the fertilizer, including:
a. assistance in the business permit application;
b. product enhancement through laboratory analysis of the fertilizer;
d. market linkage assistance where the CMU-ATBI coordinated with potential institutional buyers for the product;
e. assisted in applying the Fairness Opinion Report (FOR) from DOST; and
f. in applying for grants through preparing the business plan and other requirements.
