Project Description

The CMU-ATBI with its 3-year implementation from August 2018-June to 2021, has an ongoing twelve (12) incubatees composed of organizations and individuals, of which 11 are start-up businesses and 1 spin-off business. They were able to commercialize research-generated technologies in the university including mushroom production and vermicomposting among others. The incubates received support services that helped them grow their respective enterprises. This makes the existence of the CMU-ATBI significant to the entrepreneurial activities of the region.

The advanced incubation of the CMU-ATBI will bring the start-up incubatees to a higher level of the incubation process and it will serve more start-up incubatees and spin-offs. This will continue to enhance the culture of technology commercialization in the university and entrepreneurship in the community and economy as a whole. However, the three-year implementation is not enough to see the incubatees attain their full potential and for ATBI to extend their resources to the stakeholders and finally measure their impact on the community.  There is still the need for the advanced incubation stage, more technologies available for commercialization, wider partnerships, enhanced information dissemination, and more support services to further our common goal of inclusive and sustainable development.

ZAMPEN Chicken Technology Training a coincubation efforts between WMSU & CMU ATBI

June 20, 2022

Native Chicken Breeds have always been a part of Bukidnon's culture and tradition. Aside from it being a subsidiary source of income for rural and developing communities and a source of protein nutrition, native chicken is used for various cultural practices that are uniquely known in the province. Among these cultural practices are Pamuhat, Pamalas, and Pamahandi.

Private companies and institutional buyers are looking at native chicken as a substitute for the commercial broiler. But with the local supply unable to even out the local demand, it remains one of the industry's bottlenecks explaining why the prices are at par yet unaffected by competitive markets.

Bukidnon native breeds of chickens are identified as mongrels, these chickens are a product of backyard breeding (irresponsible breeding) which erodes their genetic purity, leading them to lose their identity and distinct characteristics over time.

In the country, the DOST PCAARRD involvement and Western Mindanao State University play a pivotal role in the development and purification of native chicken breeds. This prompted the development of a purified breed known to this day as ZAMPEN Native Chicken. A dual-purpose breed possessing superior egg-laying capability and profitability compared to its predecessor breed. It resulted from the purification of Joloano Chicken native to the Zamboanga Peninsula.

Following the technology coincubation agreement, the WMSU ATBI / TBIU led by Dr. Reynante E. Autida in partnership with CMU-ATBI headed by Prof. Sheila C. Poonon conducted an orientation seminar on ZAMPEN Native Chicken to interested technology takers namely: Mr. and Mrs. Henry M. Luyong in Bantuanon, Lantapan, and BUHI Producers Cooperative in Impasug-on, Bukidnon. The ensemble tagged along with two ZAMPEN technology experts Dr. Leonilo B. Abella and Mr. Mario A. Garan who later gave a preview of how the native chicken breed was developed, its characteristics, and how to achieve optimal results with minimal resource requirements. The encounter also became an avenue between the technology experts and incubatees to share their wisdom and insights on how to succeed in the agribusiness venture.

The World Health Organization expects that millions of enterprises will be at high risk of failing alongside peoples' livelihoods during the COVID-19 pandemic. Somehow, few businesses managed to outgrow this challenge, plying their pandemic-induced circumstances turn in their favor. One example is the MUGNA Leather Arts in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon.

Co-owned and managed by Mr. Christopher V. Pagaling and his sibling Mr. Japhet V. Pagaling,  MUGNA Leather Arts take its root as a culture-influenced (Talaandig) craft from his parents. Not until the year 2021 and amidst the pandemic that the siblings realized the far greater opportunities in Leather-made products and crafts. Among these are custom-made wallets, bracelets, and bags.

Mr. Christopher V. Pagaling is a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics and a proud alumnus of Central Mindanao University.
