Interim Reporting and Policy Practitioners' Seminar in Seoul, Korea

Dr. Vellorimo J. Suminguit, the Director of CMU-IPTBM and manager of CMU-ITSO, was nominated by IPOPHL to attend and participate in the Interim Reporting and Policy Practitioners' Seminar on June 27-July 1, 2022, in Seoul and Daejeon, Republic of South Korea. This event was attended by Korea Invention  Promotion Association (KIPA) officials, IPOPHL officials, local consultants, and select Philippine delegates mainly composed of ITSOs that achieved the platinum award granted by IPOPHL. The seminar aimed to provide the participants with detailed information on the IP landscape in Korea through a Policy Practitioner’s Seminar, which comprised lectures and study visits to IP-related institutions, including ministries and organizations.

The first day of the seminar was characterized by presentations and discussions on the interim report of the IP services and the IP status of the Philippines. More specifically, the interim reporting had three parts: Part 1 - a presentation by Dr. Yusun Park, KIPA Expert Adviser, about the current status of IP Service HR in the Philippines; Part 2 - a presentation of Dr. Kyu-Nyo Lee about his proposal for key measures to cultivate IP Service HR;  and, Part 3 -  a presentation by Moonyong Ra, a patent attorney from a law firm, about Development Plans of HRD System and Education and Training Program.

 

The second day of the program was the Policy Practitioner’s Seminar. The seminar covered the presentations about the Korean Invention Promotion Association (KIPA) and International Cooperation presented by a representative from the Korean Invention Promotion Association, and an overview of the Korean Intellectual Property Strategy Agency (KISTA) and International Cooperation.

 

The third day of the program was a continuation of the Policy Practitioner’s Seminar. This particular seminar tackled the IP Protection Policy of Korea, which was presented by the Korea Intellectual Property Protection Agency. A representative of the Korean Institute of Patent Information (KIPI) presented an overview of KIPI and its international cooperation.  Finally, the Korea Patent Attorneys Association presented the Patent Attorney System in Korea.

 

The fourth and last day of the program was the site visit and campus tour at the International Intellectual Property Training Institute and Chungnam National University, in Daejeon, South Korea.
